Following on from my last post about Spas, I decided to look at options for peels; in this case, in the London area.
Peels have been the subject of a lot of discussion amongst those involved in the beauty trade. Mainly qualifications are the subject of concern. A peel uses up to 20% of whichever acid is used. Acid is, as I am sure you know, burning stuff - and it is used in peels to take off the outer layer of skin, to reveal fresh, new skin beneath. Care taken must be absolute; leave on too long and you will be red faced for a very long time (or worse) and if not left on long enough, then there will be little or no effect.
If the person carrying out the peel is a registered and qualified Surgeon, Doctor or Registered Nurse or Registered General Nurse then as long as you have seen or have good reason to believe their qualifications, then fine. When it comes to others, that is
Aestheticians or Beauty Therapists Carrying out Chemical Peels, then things get a bit different. Again, if the salon is well known to you or to someone you know, then that makes checking a bit easier, but if that is not the case, here is a list of what to look for:
NVQ/SVQ Levels 1–4
BTEC National or Higher National
ONC/OND
HNC/HND qualified in Beauty Therapy
ITEC Diploma or Certificate
VTCT Diploma or Certificate
CIBTAC Diploma
Membership of The British Association of Beauty Therapy and Cosmetology (BABTAC)
Membership of CIDESCO
There are also additional training courses that the practitioner may have undergone, offered by numerous commercial practices, so ask about these as well for a greater surety. Naturally, it is important with anyu peel process for any practitioner to check that your skin is suitable for the peeling process.
As to costs, these vary significantly. Some examples in the London area include (all prices are "from" - but do show the general pricing area) :
Glycolic and Mandelic Acid peel at Nasslam Aesthetics, London W2 £44 and a 20 minutes facial microdermabrasion £66
SkinglowClinic Notting Hill offer a Glycolic Facial for £78, F.A.B.U of Kings Road Chelsea offer a 20 minute deep cleansing facial peel for £145
Touch by Kimani in Saperton Walk, Lambeth offer a Salicylic Acid Facial Peel at £56.
Enjoy!
